The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine had 144 fourth-year medical students participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) in 2026. Among this year’s graduates, 40 will remain in Iowa for their first year of postgraduate training, and 33 of these 40 students will train next year at UI Health Care.

Nearly 53% of this year’s cohort chose primary care specialties, which include family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology.

The primary care breakdown:

  •  Internal Medicine — 28
  •  Family Medicine — 19
  •  Obstetrics-Gynecology — 11
  •  Pediatrics – 9
  •  Internal Medicine-Primary — 4
  •  Medicine-Pediatrics — 2
